Jack could have kicked himself for what he had just done. He not only kept Eden from her homeland, but now he took her virginity as well. She was crying, though she tried hard not to let him see it. Heâd made a mistake again. Had he been thinking with his head and not his zipper, he would have realized she was fragile and not ready for this.
She said she wanted him, but now he knew it was only because she wanted to please him after causing him so much trouble. The damage was done and it was something that could never be reversed. He had been so aroused that he hadnât even remembered to use protection.
âIâm sorry, Sweetheart.â He pulled her to his chest and kissed the top of her head. âHad I known, I wouldnât have touched you.â
âNo, Iâm the one who is sorry,â said Eden. âIâve disappointed you, just like I did my own people.â
âWhat are you talking about?â he asked in a gentle tone as he smoothed down her hair. âYou didnât disappoint me at all. It was just the opposite.â
âMountain girls are married at adulthood,â she explained. âItâs unusual and not accepted to be as old as me and still not wed.â
âAnd are the girls expected to be virgins when they marry?â he asked.
She smiled and relaxed a little as she lay back down and snuggled into his arms. âA child must be conceived before the couple are allowed to marry. The union must be proven fruitful first.â
Jack felt a rush of anxiety sweep through him. Is this why she wanted him? Was she trying to conceive, and did she have marrying on the mind? Jack wasnât ready for a commitment like this, and no one was going to rush him.
âEden, I think that after tonight we should slow down a little.â
Her body tensed in his arms. âYou donât want me, Jack?â
âNo, no, just the opposite. All I mean is that we should get to know each other better before we do it again.â
âI agree,â said Eden with a sniffle. âIâd like that.â
Jack spent the night with Eden curled up in his arms. It felt good to be near her, but he knew he couldnât spend another night here. Not without wanting her and taking her again. Tomorrow, heâd go back to the room above the garage and they would start all over. Tomorrow, heâd get to know the real Eden Ramirez.
